Less sanctions, more prevention to fight corruption in global development

The World Bank’s efforts to stamp out corruption in bank-funded projects continue to be hampered by the fact that there has not yet been a true shift in hearts and minds about eradicating graft. One way to tackle this problem is to focus more on prevention over legal sanctions and engage civil society, experts agreed last week during a panel discussion at the institution’s annual meetings in Washington, D.C. Recent research from the University of Bocconi in Italy presented during the discussion suggests that prevention and awareness campaigns arguably do more for anti-corruption efforts than legal repercussions.
