Myanmar parliament upgrades anti-corruption agency to government ministry level

An amendment to the Anti-Corruption Law that MPs say could give the Anti-Corruption Commission more powers to tackle high-level graft has been passed by parliament’s upper house. The Amyotha Hluttaw approved the amendments on July 4, upgrading the commission to a union-level body – effectively on par with a government ministry. “If they don’t have union-level authority, it will be hard to take action against a corrupt union minister effectively,” said U Myat Nyarna Soe from the Amyotha Hluttaw Bill Committee.
