"Corruption isn't always a bad thing"

Is corruption always a bad thing? Not so, argued author, former journalist, public health advocate and Indonesia expert Elizabeth Pisani. Her argument is that there are forms of corruption that actually benefit the economy. “It’s about understanding how to differentiate the unproductive corruption from the patronage systems embedded in many cultures,” she said. Ms. Pisani has spent several years in Indonesia and uses former President Suharto’s corrupt practices to expand on her thesis.
